Mental Health Awareness Month and Freebie

 

1 in 5 Canadians will experience a form of Mental Illness at some point in their life.  For something that quite common, mental illnesses are still feared and misunderstood by many people.  February is Mental Health Awareness Month here in Canada.   This includes quite a range of illnesses from Anxiety Disorders, Attention Deficit Disorders (ADD), Depression, Eating Disorders, Self-Injury and Suicide.  (and there are still more!) 

Two of the statistics that stands out for me is that a)  2 in 3 people suffer in silence fearing judgment and rejection.  and b) that only 49% of Canadians said they would socialize with a friend who has a serious mental illness. 

One of the highlights that stand out for me during this month is Bell’s Let’s Talk Day.  Which is February 12.  On that day, Bell will donate 5 cents more to mental health initiatives across Canada for every text and long distance call, by a Bell or Bell Alliant customer.  But this year they have also opened it up to facebook and twitter.   For every tweet that contains the hash tag #BellLetsTalk, as well as every facebook share of their Bell Let’s Talk image, they will also donate 5 cents more.  You can find more information on their website – HERE, or their facebook page – HERE  What a great fundraiser.  All we need to do is talk.  So please mark down February 12th, and help spread the word of Mental Illness. 

*I just wanted to note that I know that the donations from this day actually go to local charities through Canada.  Last year, the Waterloo Region Suicide Prevention Council (The region in which I live) actually received money.  We are by no means a large city.  Bell is do a great job of getting funds out to where they are needed.

Included in the month of Mental Health Awareness here in Canada also includes a week that is focused on eating disorders.  I personally knew they existed, but until I was diagnosed with one, I was not aware of how common they were.  But again, it comes out that the worst symptom is the silence.  So I am asking your help in spreading the word.  To help break free from the silence.  Sadly silence place a role in all mental health issues.

Today I also have a freebie to give you.  It is a small kit that I created when I had just learned that I have an eating disorder.  My mind was all over the place, and I found that being creative was the perfect outlet for me.  I would love to hear what you thought.

$2 Tuesday–February 5, 2013

Has everyone recovered from this past weekend?  I certainly did not want to get up Monday morning!  Thanks to some emails, I know that it is Tuesday.  I have spent the last 7 hours trying to get this post to post.  Things are not quite as neat as I like, but this seems to be the only way to get this to work today.  Since it is Tuesday, that means that you can find out what is on sale over at Stuff to Scrap for just $2 - for today only.  So without taking up too much time here, on to the sales!  Since it is February, many of us are thinking of Valentines Day.  Both Leaving a Legacy Designs, and Mommy Me Time Scrapper have kits on sale for only $2, that would be perfect for making Valentines Day cards, candy toppers, etc.  Just remember that the sale ends tonight (EST)

Happy Groundhog Day.  I woke up today to find out that Punxsutawney Phil and Wiarton Willie are both predicting an early spring!  YAY!  (and yes, I am just going to pretend that the ones predicting 6 more weeks of winter are not there)  It is not like I don’t like winter, it is just that I hate driving in the winter. 

This week Romajo is releasing a new kit that is full of LOVE-ly things.  She looked at her kit Iced Love, and decided to warm things up.  So the colours are much warmer in her new kit, De-iced Love.  She had so much fun designing this kit, that she has also created a bunch of additional packs.  (And has also bundled them all together for more of a savings!)  So enough of me talking – take a look:

It’s February

 

So who is like me and still thinks it is the second or third week in January?  So many people I have talked to can’t answer that.  It really shows me that I need to make moments now, instead of making memories. 

Being February means that there are new BAKs at STS!  YAY.  This month the inspiration was retro, and there are some pretty amazing things in there.  Here is a quick peak, as well as a coupon code to save 50% if you buy 3 or more.  (the image is linked to take you to all of February’s BAKs

Here is a closer look at a few of them that I got to play with:

Mommy Me Time Scrapper was inspired by sock monkeys, and became “For the Love of Monkeys”.   Do you remember these?  I think every family had one when I was growing up. 

One word comes to mind when I saw the kits that Leaving a Legacy Designs was creating – GROOVY!

I was born in 1979, so I really missed this era.  So I was trying to find something that would fit the Groovy theme.  Sadly, the only thing that came to mind was Shaggy from Scooby Doo!  But I did have some drawings that I did quite a while ago and scrapped them.

Today is a busy day, and I will be back with more goodness to show you.  So many good things to start off February with.  I myself also have a freebie kit for you this week too, so stay tuned for that.
